It is an irony not lost on me. This commission at this time in history.
Could two such figures emerge today in this age of perpetual upheaval? Two new champions might provide a flow of positive ideas and heroism which could strike a blow to the vile extremism which seems to have engulfed much of the collective consciousness. The human race has much to learn from the leaders of the civil rights movement. We continue to prove MLK and Ali right by our descent into barbarism. It may be true that man has always been this way, and that today is different only in that communication is swift. Perhaps the game changer is the very distinct possibility of nuclear annihilation.
I will let the piece speak for itself. Equality, Truth and Freedom seem more elusive today than perhaps since the time of King and Ali. Racism, gender equality, genocide still dominate the headlines. Truth has become a question of belief and science itself a matter of opinion. Fact is increasingly irrelevant.
There is a marked difference between the protests of the sixties and today's movements. There was clarity. Prominent figures in the fight for Justice (Equality, Truth and Freedom) could be cloaked in righteousness and still be believable. They were flawed, but they were human.
Martin Luther King holds a hand in a gesture which suggests reason, discourse, compromise. Ali holds up a clenched fist. Often, as history has taught us, the loftier goals are reached by combining approaches.
